Argument

The basis of an Argument paper is persuasion. Argument is suitable for students who have been assigned to discuss and argue for one side or the other of any hotly-debated problem affecting society today, and it is especially suitable for those who have been asked to propose their own solution to that problem.
What's involved?
  • Student Writing Coach (SWC) asks questions about the origins of the chosen social problem, along with the origins of the debate surrounding that problem.
  • It asks students to develop and defend their own solution to the problem.
  • It allows students to anticipate and refute any possible attacks against their proposed solution, using outside sources if applicable.
  • It offers a choice of introductions.
Is SWC's Argument right for you?
  1. Does your assignment ask you to discuss a current societal issue that as yet has not been satisfactorily solved?
  2. Does your assignment contain words such as argue, debate, controversy, persuade, solve, or resolve?
Yes to both questions?
Argument is probably right for you.

No to the first question?
If your assignment is asking for an opinion, but does not have to do with societal issues, then take a look at Review - Live subject or Review - Recorded subject.

No to the second question?
Consider Report, which allows students to discuss a subject and its history but does not rely so heavily on the writer's own opinions.
